Suzuki Marine dealers Dave and Tina Ennenga of Water’s Edge Marine in Kodiak, Alaska recently demonstrated the true spirit of Suzuki’s CLEAN OCEAN PROJECT, coordinating more than 50 volunteers to hit the beaches and coastal shorelines around Long Island on the Kodiak Archipelago, removing an amazing 2,080 pounds of trash in a single day.
Even more impressive, they were able to recycle 1,120 pounds of these materials, meaning that more of the total haul was repurposed than put into the landfill. The overall effort was supported by a fleet of five Suzuki-powered vessels, used to move volunteers all over the island and haul collected garbage to the basecamp for sorting, weighing, and proper disposal.
Having these boats — powered by a total of nine Suzuki 4-stroke outboards ranging from 140 to 300 horsepower — greatly expanded the reach of this clean-up effort and allowed the group to reach remote areas in need of trash collection. Using this land-and-sea approach helped make this clean-up effort one of the largest single day collections (by total weight) in Suzuki Marine history.
“Alaska is known around the world for its natural beauty and pristine ocean waters that are full of life, but it faces the same challenges of trash, pollution and microplastics as states in the Lower ways, the challenge is even bigger, due to the remoteness of the shorelines and difficulty with access, said Suzuki Marine USA Vice President Sales and Marketing Brandon Cerka. “We applaud Water’s Edge Marine and the many volunteers who helped in this effort, for getting out on the water, rolling up their sleeves, and doing this hard but necessary work. All of us at Suzuki Marine are proud of their achievement, and how they demonstrated Suzuki’s CLEAN OCEAN PROJECT in action,” Cerka added.
